Black Andalusian

Black Andalusian horses look very elegant and graceful. The breed takes its name from the region of Andalusia in the Iberian Peninsula. The history of this horse breed is well documented in carvings and drawings, as for many centuries, this ancient breed has been closely connected with wars. Andalusian horses were valued by the Romans and Greek. The first painting featuring an Andalusian horse is about 20,000 years old. Today, many horse breeds have Andalusian blood, but the Andalusian horse has lost much of its popularity.

A purebred black Andalusian horse is rather difficult to buy. The common colors in this breed are white and gray. Black and bay Andalusian horses comprise about 20% of the population. The main beauty of the breed is in its long neck and thick mane and tail. The height of the Andalusian horse is between 15.2 and 16.2 hands at the withers. The back should be short; the quarters are broad; the croup is rounded. The head of Andalusian horses is rectangular, of medium size, with broad forehead, convex face and well-placed ears. The eyes of these horses are oval, with intelligent and lively expression.

When purchasing a purebred black Andalusian horse, don’t be an impulsive buyer, but check the horse and its papers carefully. Prior to purchasing, decide what exactly you need a horse for and choose a breeder who breeds for the same purposes. It’s very important to study the pedigree of the horse and see its parents, especially if you buy a horse for racing or showing. When choosing a mount for pleasure riding or a pet for children, make sure the horse is quiet and well-trained. This breed is good for the first-time horse owners. It’s hardy, obedient and easy to keep.

A black Andalusian horse may be difficult to buy in the USA, because this breed is poorly established nowadays. This breed is not versatile and specialized to fit with modern demands. Andalusian horses are still used for improving the general characteristics of other breeds by crossbreeding. Buying a high quality black Andalusian horse or stallion can become a good investment.
